YAP music offers workshops and tuition sessions for young people with an interest in informal music.

This project has a 22 year history of providing quality tuition on guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, DJ skills and songwriting. Participants have also gained skills in planning gigs/events, involved in promotion and marketing and had the chance to perform at live events. We support young people from the age of 10 - 24 years, any skill levels from absolute beginners to intermediates in a safe, supportive and friendly environment where they are free to be creative.

Weekly Music Club takes place:

Every Tuesday 6.30pm – 9pm (£1.50)

Children's Development Centre,

The Mall, Livingston (Next to SPARK)

Livingston EH54 5EJ

Many of our young people who attended Yap Music have moved on to studying music at Collage and University,  gained recognition of their work through Youth Achievement Awards, Millennium Awards and some young people have returned as volunteers and paid staff members.

SUMMER ACADEMY:

YAP music summer music academies are week-long training courses for young people. The focus is on tuition for guitar, bass, drums, vocals and songwriting with professional musicians brought in to help with the tuition and share their wealth of knowledge. The first day of the course consists of tuition on the young person's chosen instrument, they will be drafted into a band and then the remaining week will be consist of intense tuition and rehearsals of their chosen songs. The band will then move into a professional recording studio to record one song. They will also have professional photo shoot done in their band and discuss image and marketing. On the final week of academies there will be a live gig where all the academy participants perform their songs to a live audience. The course proves to be extremely popular every year and we are extremely proud to say that many of YAP’s students have either moved on to full time music education or employment in the music business, even though many initially lack formal music training. Participants are also encouraged to assist in designing posters and or helping with sound engineering and equipment maintenance.

The Big Music Project: Archived

The Big Music Project - a new opportunity

(Lottery Funded Project in association with Youth Scotland)

Yap Music recruited 10 Music Champions to work alongside staff on a peer education programme in West Lothian. The Music Champions (with support/training) will take a role in organising and delivering youth led music related projects that will benefit our local community. They will be supported to develop skills as a Peer Educator (communication skills, organisational and planning skills, evaluation skills, delivery skills). They will receive The Big Music Project Toolkit that is full of advice and guidance about planning a project and developing skills. They will also be a part of the online Champions network, where we will share ideas, opportunities including work experience in the Music industry and resources.

They have an opportunity to gain a recognised accreditation through the Youth Achievement Awards. Music Champions are encouraged to work within their own strengths and capabilities, alongside support from staff and the wider Big Music Project team

This is an exciting project in which we hope to deliver peer led music sessions to 100+ young people throughout West Lothian over the coming years making a difference where it counts – Peer to Peer. Follow our journey on Yap Music Facebook
